Genetics - odds of children also being on spectrum

I know that research into genetic causes of autism is still in its early stages, but I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any research into how likely people on the spectrum are to have children who are also on the spectrum?

I'm 23 with mild Aspergers and although it's not likely to happen any time soon, I do want a family one day.  When I asked a few years back, no one seemed to be able to give me an answer about how likely it was that any child I had would also be on the spectrum.

If there's no study, does anyone have any personal/anecdotal experience?

  • As I understand it, the exact genetics of Autism aren't well understood, so no-one can currently say what the chances of one have an autistic child are, but it is pretty certain that there is a genetic component to it (but probably more pre-dispositional than causal).

  •  Who knows what the scientists will tell us in a few years but I know what I believe. My husband has AS and we reckon his dad does too. Dad not diagnosed and not about to be in his 60's but he is so like my husband and shows all the traits. Hubby reckons his grandpa was, again not diagnosed and I never met him, but he would know.

And now our 2 year old son is about to be assessed and is showing all the signs he is on the spectrum.

BUT I'm not worried, it's not a big deal. Grandpa was an engineer, his dad is a scientist, my hubby is a professional too and he reckons its because of their obsessions they worked they way they do and achieved what they have.
