National Autism Show 'Meeting Place'

With the National Autism Show only a couple of months away, and in view of requests on this forming for some sort of 'social event' and the practicalities of such, I thought I would share a thought I had.

I notice there is something called 'Autism Meets' where it says we can meet others on the spectrm.  So why not put a number of chairs and tables and a tea urn, where autistic visitors could meet other visitors for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.  This facility need only be for a short time at each site of the show, say from 12:30 until 1:30, where someone from the NAS could keep a distant eye on things to ensure things remain congenial.  So it would go something like: 'Meet other autistic people at the Autism Meets stand for a little social get together and a cup of tea'.  Those who contribute regularly here could also wear a badge with their forum name on.  This would just expand the facility avaliable where it says we can meet other autistic people but I take this to mean speakers or stand assistants who are autistic, not the 'ordinary' autistic person in the street - if such a thing exists.

This would not be a 'speed-dating' or any other type of dating facility, it would just give a chance for us to say hello to other autistic people like us and would simply expand the remit of the area as it is proposed at the moment. It might also give an opportunity for parents with autistic children to meet others and discuss their own problems and views...

So what do others think?

  • I would attend this!

I'd really like to be able to meet other autistic adults and this would be an ideal way to do it. Joining a group (as in walking into a room full of an already established group) isn't something I'm ready for yet but this would be like a 'taster session' in preparation for joining a group and would be something I feel I'd really benefit from.
