Neighbours have asked me to be quieter - ideas on how to approach this

I live in a block of six flats and my bedroom is next to my neighbours. My neighbour and her partner are absolutely lovely, however, the women has knocked on my door tonight to ask if I can be quieter in a morning as my footsteps are waking her OH up and he's ill so needs his sleep. They've helped me out when I've needed it so I do want to be quieter for them but I don't know how to go about this. I get up around 6am and neither of them work so I can see why they think that's early (esp whilst its dark) but I'm only awake for around 30 minutes before I leave and I'm only in my bedroom whilst I get dressed. I asked if anything else bothered them, such as me using the hairdryer in the hallway, but its just my footsteps. I'm going to buy a rug to go over the bedroom carpet but other than that I don't think there's anything else I can do. Do you think that's enough of a goodwill gesture?

  • It was frustrating to hear as I've lived her since 2014 but my partner left me over Xmas so I suppose they're thinking 'new beginnings', lets get this issue sorted now. The two partners I've lived with in the past have both commented that I'm heavy footed so it's understandable that they might hear me.

I don't wear shoes in the house but an internet search has suggested slippers might help. Luckily I have been gifted a pair today so I can easily try that. I've also seen a reasonably priced rug in Ikea that has been labelled 'sound reduction' so I'm going to get that tomorrow.

A common suggestion on the internet was that I'm a 'heel planter', which is basically heavy footed. This means walking on the ball of my foot would greatly reduce the sound that my footsteps make. I've just started a new job, my ex partner has left so I newly live alone and I've started attending a running club so I can't cope with any more major changes such as changing the way I walk at home, so fingers crossed for the rug and slippers.
