The Autism Show

I've been sent the publicity for the Autism Show in London on 15th-16th June.

One thing struck me immediately - doesn't seem to be much about adults.

NAS is doing all this campaigning to increase awareness of adults - from "I exist" to the current employability campaign.

However a key high profile exhibition and conference in London still addresses things as if autism only affects children.  OK I know this is aimed at parents, carers and professionals, but things seem to be stuck in a Peter Pan world where people with autism never grow up.

This problem is a conveyor belt. The children of ten or twenty years ago are now adults. But we still seem to limit the horizons to parents' groups supporting children.

The trouble is politicians and other prime movers will be visiting this event. And in massive contradiction to all the campaigning, they still see this myth that somehow you grow out of it, or become invisible.

Agreed there are some presentations on independent living and lifelong learning. But adults just aren't visible at this event.

Can we have some joined up thinking please?

    Very good point.
