Can anybody help?

Hi,

I have a 17 yr son who has high-functioning Autism, epilepsy,ADHD and complex needs with a dash of learning difficulties. He broke his foot last week and has crutches however these got him into trouble last week and he was aressted by the police. Two lads were fighting and another one joined in so he hit the lad who'd joined in with his crutch. He said it made an unfair fight)  He got arressted for using a lethal weapon, however according to my son its a crutch not a lethal weapon. The police interviwed him with no one else there and didnt contact me. He told them he was autistic and they asked him if he needed medication he said' you dont take medication for Autism' oh well i dont know anything about it said the police.

They asked him if he wanted a solicitor but He said No,he didnt know what one does !! Have the police interviewed him wrong as all they kept saying on the tape is ' can you tell by the other lads body langauge he was trying to break up the fight' unfortunatly my son is unaware of his own body lang' let alone someone elses.

Id be grateful if anyone else has come across this as its going to youth court and my son says he hopes he goes to prison as its a 'secure regular timetable' and at least he knows that it wont change !

At the moment we are currently trying to get funding for a specialist college for september which will help immensly.

  • All the work I do creatively to express and explore what it is to be autistic, is perfectly summed up antithetically in the lack of any perspective on your son, that the police demonstrated. This is the problem. We look like one thing when we are something else. What you have here is a hilariously obvious state of affairs to an educated court. It is imperative that our society be educated about what it is to be autistic at every level as soon as possible. I got my diagnosis at the age of 41 through a court case. The police should not actually have arrested my friend and I in the first place. They got no evidence of any harm done my my friend and I save some dodgy testimonies. We were acquitted. If your son is charged to court, the acquisition of a good solicitor who knows about autism, and expert witnesses from Nas sources, will make a mockery of the CPS case. Indeed, if you pitch it well enough it won't get that far. So good luck. A classic case this. There will be lots more as there already have been. Thank you for sharing.
