Therapy and Therapist not understanding impact of diagnosis

Ive recently been diagnoised with Autism at 41(m) and have been having psyvotherapy for 2 years or so due to trauma and mental health issues. Despite a few attempts by care co and others, my therapist is not really understanding the difficulties of adjusting to a diagnosis, and seems to think becuase im viewed as intelligent and "high functioning" theres nothing really to struggle with.

With everything else she is a really good therapist, just feels bit dismissive of neurodivergence generally. She knows im high masking with other struggles, but i cant quite seem to convey its the same if not higher level of masking with my autism.

Just making it abit harder presently

  • It's difficult when you find you're struggling with your therapist. I've had some I've really clicked with and others where it's been a struggle. Sometimes I stuck with it for what i could get but with at least one I just gave up. It might be worth looking for a new therapist, though it's always a gamble. The NAS Directory could help you locate an autistic-friendly therapist near you.
