Vent about how confusing it can be to be autistic

Being autistic often feels rough in that I understand human psychology but it is all so complex. Like, people have different defense mechanisms and sometimes they make zero sense but it is about accepting that they cope that way. It is also like a combination of needing to have boundaries and not letting people walk all over you while also recognising people behave in confusing ways and their intentions are not always clear. i have been victimised on multiple occasions and largely, i did not even see what was happening initially. like giving someone the benefit of the doubt shouldn't lead to me being harmed. i want to stay safe in the future while also recognising varying intentions. sometimes the whole world feels unsafe and like there's this barrier. i overflow with details and people just switch off. i get bothered about small things and get stuck and need to talk about it over and over till i get "unstuck". when something or someone becomes important to me, i can have a mental health crisis if something goes wrong related to it. i tend to take people's word for it. i over analyse constantly trying to map out why something is happening. i often need to feel understood and reach out for clarity.

  • Hey NAS84324, I just joined the forum today looking for some answers too. I couldn't read and run, I recognised a lot of what you are saying. I especialy relate right now to not even seeing things happen initally. I was recently taken in by a religous group (I don't know if I can say that on here?) and was siging their virtues to all who would listen as they were so nice to me. Then I saw one of their training videos online and realised what I saw had been used on me! I Googled and their tactic is to initally love bomb. I felt quite duped and foolish when I realised. How could I not see what was going on? Like you I give everyone the benefit of thee doubt. Is it an autistic trait to trust first, ask questions later?

I also understand about the whole world not feeling safe, and totally relate to the mental health crisis! It's not just upset, it's totally and utterly overpowering isn't it?

That's why today I Googled online autism community and found myself here. I wanted to talk and connect with others and shares experriences and tips, etc.

Can I ask, and you don't have to answer of course, how long you've been diagnosed? I was a couple of years ago, just told I was autistic, given a web link and left to it! It's only recenntly since I've been chattiing with AI that I have discovered 99% of my day is goverened by autism! (Sleep inertia, restless legs at night, getting 'stuck' mentally and physically, masking, burnout, inability to switch off. etc.) It's amazing just what is affected by autism!

I've got to go for now, I want to watch Dr Chhattergees talk live on letting go off stress at 7pm. I hope my message is ok for you, don't feel you have to reply (I get that too on forums, lol.) I just wanted to reach out and tell you you are not alone.
