Hostile Environment

Does the world seem like a hostile environment to you personally, not on a global level, but in every day life?

At the moment every thing feels like wading through treacle, its all jam tomorrow, never jam today, even simple things like getting a tyre changed, it has to be ordered and I've got to go back tomorrow, another 25 mile round trip and I've got my MOT soon too and I'm dreading it, how much it will cost, will the car be OK, what if I have to get a new car? I know I'm catastrophising, but some times it feels so hard no too. There seems barely enough time to do the things I have to do, let alone things I'd like to do.

Then there are the people who breeze through life without a care in the world because they know there's always someone else who will pick up the pieces, willingly or not, I'm tired of tidying up bits and pieces of other peoples lives, I want to concentrate on my life and my wants and needs and then I feel selfish.

Parents

  • I think the world always has been a hostile envirnment but today's hostilities are different. Gadgets and income haven't brought more free time - think of time spent choosing, buying, maintaining, updating - and most of all, worrying when it doesn't work or needs replacement. No, I wouldn't want to spend all week hand washing, dollying and mangling as did my grandmother, nor cooking over an open fire and preparing ingredients from scratch.

    However, the world is easier to survive in, because of available food, shelter, something to barter [including money] and companionship. We don't have to carry clubs and spears to survive daily, because we have police, ambulances, the NHS, fire brigade, lifeboat service and so on. We have also developed moral and legal codes. None of these things is ever perfect, nor will be, but its better than the tools and societies our ancestors had. Once you recover from this difficult phase of your life, you can fall back on the above - and that is a great deal to be thankful for. We live in a basically free society, are free to complain locally or to Parliament, and our logistical systems work.

    I think it depends on the gadget to be honest, an automatic washing machine is a huge time saver and so much easier.

    A food processor for chopping things up and making soup.

    I enjoy my kindle and use it pretty much everyday.

    I think it all depends on how attached to gadgets you are, some people buy everything going and then it sits in the back of the cupboard for years until it's thrown out. Others like me see these things as tools and have the right tools for the life we lead.
