Adult Neurodiversity Psychiatrist Specialist

I'm wondering if there are any adult neurodiversity psychiatrist specialists working in the UK.

So much of what I have found on-line relates to child specialists in the area of neurodiversity.

I am concerned that I am going to consult with someone who does not understand neurodiversity with all of its intricacies and that I will not receive appropriate medication.

I have been referred to the local NHS mental health team and it feels like a lot is riding on getting a correct diagnosis and appropriate medication.

Unfortunately I have been around in loops in the mental health service and I have received incorrect diagnosis and treatment.

They had also completely overlooked the possibility that I have autism (until I paid for a private adhd

assessment and it was flagged up as autism being a strong potential and I believe I've got some adhd overlapping traits).

I am now in my 50's so you can see where my distrust comes from.

I'm willing to pay privately for a specialist if I get no joy from my local services.

Do such specialists exist in the UK?  Anyone used this kind of service.

Thank you.

  • Hi Wandawitch, I hope you are well. Reading this I can certainly understand your concerns/worries about consulting with someone who perhaps doesn't specialise in neurodiversity and it's intricacies.

You may find the following useful:

    • Advocacy Services- Search online for 'advocacy + [name of your Local Authority/Trust]'. Some autism friendly advocacy services are also listed in our Autism Services Directory

I hope you find this of some use. I sincerely wish you all the best.
