First Doctors Appointment for ASD diagnosis - what should I expect?

I have decided to get a formal diagnosis for ASD and so I have made a doctors appointment.

I'm anxious about what I will be asked and if my issues will be brushed off as nothing so I'm hoping the community here can help.

What should I expect to be asked in my first appointment with the Doctor? I know it is just to get a referral but I really need this to work as life isn't easy.

Thank you

  • I took the result. I think I printed the questions and looked up the scoring. I guess you could just do AQ10. I got sent another from from psychology and another test anyway. I did find it helpful to have a list of things when I went for the appointment to confirm whether I would be referred to go on the waiting list, as they asked a lot of questions including about childhood.

  • Great thanks. Did you take your result or all the test results? Some of the tests will require a lot of printing!

  • I took a copy of the AQ test I did online and as I was already struggling that was considered enough to refer. Then I was sent more things from psychological services to fill out and had an appointment within 28 days where I was asked lots of questions. It's  a good idea to have things written down as well.

  • Hi MarcoPolo, welcome to the community.

Our website has a diagnosis hub, this includes information, practical and multimedia resources to support autistic people and their families before during and after diagnosis.

You may want to visit the other resources on our website, we have advice and guidance on a wide range of information about autism, socialising and relationships, communication and education: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance

You can try searching on our Autism Services Directory for diagnostic services in your local area.  The Directory also includes listings for support and social groups for autistic people, their families and friends.

    All the best

  • Thanks, Im definitely going to need to take prompts so I don't freeze! Ive started re-reading some of the books and podcasts for reminders of examples in life.

  • Great thanks, I have started writing bullet points already and the appointment is over 2 weeks away so hopefully they will come to me by then.
I can take my test results too, a bit long to print all the answers but I can at least give the scores
    RADS-R =184,
    AQ10 = 9/10.
I think that If they give me tests to take away I will do them in the waiting room and hand them straight in.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I was asked to fill in a few questionnaires and asked about why I felt i wanted the assessment.

I just talked about how ive always struggled with things that others found easy and I went armed with real life example.

  • Hi, normally you will just be asked for some background information about yourself and experiences, it might help you to make some bullet points on a piece of paper, you can add to the list when they come into your head. It will help with ‘freezing’ on the day and you perhaps not remembering anything.

It is also standard to be given an AQ10 or AQ50 test to takeaway and return when completed, this normally acts as the first triage. Good luck with your appointment.
