Work probation been extendend by 3months - Only negative comments are personality traits

HI All,

Bit of Background:

27, Live on my own family near by. Travel roughly 1 hour to work each way. Awaiting ASD assesment.

Just recently joined as I had a meeting today with my manager. As of today, I've been with this company for  6 Months.

Overall I love my job and want to stay, Its a dream i've been fixing for the past year. if my manager had it his way I wouldn't of been extendend but these negative comments I've seen in past and don't know what more I can do so I'm asking for some help or advice:

  • Seniority - I've been told today that i don't nesseary listen to one of my seniors when given a task. Typically when they check in, im working on something else or attempting to multitask as I've been given the role of support or the likes. Is there a way I can show that i have there task but just trying to get to it?

  • Keep Tasks brief - I was good at teaching during college and i think that has followed me everywhere I go. At my last long standing job (2 Years) I was THE person to go towards then as our other seniors had left (10 years + Service) i was also the top in the phone queue for phone support for the last year there. I think this goes towards how when im asked a question, I like trying to explain the whole thing or at least make an attempt to share understanding.

  • Dropping in to other conversation - This is a bad habit I picked up during being a barman, but its always kept me safe, in the know and the likes. Face's and gestures don't beat spoken words. I also try to participate when I'm nearby.

  • Too confident when wrong - Think this one is from bars too, I'm normally the first to raise hand to say when I'm wrong or at least " I don't know, but if i was to guess its would be this that casued it...." and the likes.
  • Attention to detail - I'm think this was from a order screw up where I didn't pay attention or didn't know about a connector type but I fully understand that even in a rush, i need to be on the ball.
  • Neatness - I get this one too. I like taking on alot to keep me occupied and going. but alot of half projects remain along with tools and such. I've done a decent tidy up today in work as there was a office move I was off sick for.

My main reason for posting is its been festering all the way home today. The only solution I can see is being quite and putting headphones on so im not listening all the time but that remains diffcult as when the office is noisy its a struggle to just focus on music. When I work from home I put on a radio station and crack on (One of the complements I got in work when im there). My boss is fully open to talk to me about this too but I just wanted a bit more to see if i can find a way of at least showing improvement.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

  • Typically when they check in, im working on something else or attempting to multitask

It sounds like you may need help in prioritising your tasks if they give you a task but you do not assign it the same priority that they ask for. Typically this will get a slightly higher priority than other tasks so you need to show you have at least started it.

If you disagree or find an issue in prioritising it then ask them to look at the list of what you are required to do on the days they ask and ask what should be de-prioritised in order to do their task. This typically gives you the answer or gets them to shut up when they realise you have more important work on the go.

I like trying to explain the whole thing or at least make an attempt to share understanding.

You will need to learn how to be briefer I think. Many people just want the answer, not the reason for the answer so start your response by asking "do you want the answer or learn how to get it for yourself" and it should tell you if you need the abbreviated version or not.

If you have priority tasks to deal with then give then the brief version - your time is not yet your own to choose how you spend it so keep it brief so you can deal with your other tasks.

    Dropping in to other conversation

While things are a bit iffy at work please stop this. Do your job and avoid getting into conversations or other tasks so you can keep your tasks complete quickly. This sort of extra value you can add should wait until your position is secure.

Likewise for being confident when wrong. Stay quiet until your position is secure.

Maybe instead of music keep a task list on hand and when you need a distraction then look at it, decide what should be next and use this to keep your multitasking effective. Music can be part of things when you are secure but for now prove you can do the core tasks you are given without distraction.

I did this today, Kept my head down working on existing tasks no one bothered me with my headphones in an i waited until it came from a manager or senior. Seems to be working and i'm getting back on track. I will admit, it did feel a bit isolating but I kept pushing with my tasks.

As I said to  Managers are only an arms length away and blocking the noise helped. Went for a walk to enjoy my lunch instead of being in the building and that helped loads today with my worries gone up.

Got it, keep it to the support ticket. In and out but keep it social/friendly.

Definatly, my core role is support as a junior, but the ticketing system only goes as far as the user. so its more of a fight of do I do the task just given and hope its a 5 min job. or do i turn around now say "hey. its needs to be a ticket as X has given me a urgent task"
