Work probation been extendend by 3months - Only negative comments are personality traits

HI All,

Bit of Background:

27, Live on my own family near by. Travel roughly 1 hour to work each way. Awaiting ASD assesment.

Just recently joined as I had a meeting today with my manager. As of today, I've been with this company for  6 Months.

Overall I love my job and want to stay, Its a dream i've been fixing for the past year. if my manager had it his way I wouldn't of been extendend but these negative comments I've seen in past and don't know what more I can do so I'm asking for some help or advice:

  • Seniority - I've been told today that i don't nesseary listen to one of my seniors when given a task. Typically when they check in, im working on something else or attempting to multitask as I've been given the role of support or the likes. Is there a way I can show that i have there task but just trying to get to it?

  • Keep Tasks brief - I was good at teaching during college and i think that has followed me everywhere I go. At my last long standing job (2 Years) I was THE person to go towards then as our other seniors had left (10 years + Service) i was also the top in the phone queue for phone support for the last year there. I think this goes towards how when im asked a question, I like trying to explain the whole thing or at least make an attempt to share understanding.

  • Dropping in to other conversation - This is a bad habit I picked up during being a barman, but its always kept me safe, in the know and the likes. Face's and gestures don't beat spoken words. I also try to participate when I'm nearby.

  • Too confident when wrong - Think this one is from bars too, I'm normally the first to raise hand to say when I'm wrong or at least " I don't know, but if i was to guess its would be this that casued it...." and the likes.
  • Attention to detail - I'm think this was from a order screw up where I didn't pay attention or didn't know about a connector type but I fully understand that even in a rush, i need to be on the ball.
  • Neatness - I get this one too. I like taking on alot to keep me occupied and going. but alot of half projects remain along with tools and such. I've done a decent tidy up today in work as there was a office move I was off sick for.

My main reason for posting is its been festering all the way home today. The only solution I can see is being quite and putting headphones on so im not listening all the time but that remains diffcult as when the office is noisy its a struggle to just focus on music. When I work from home I put on a radio station and crack on (One of the complements I got in work when im there). My boss is fully open to talk to me about this too but I just wanted a bit more to see if i can find a way of at least showing improvement.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

  • Hi and welcome to the community. I'm wondering what your job actually is?I

I'll give some comments on the points you have shared with us:

i don't nesseary listen to one of my seniors when given a task. Typically when they check in, im working on something else or attempting to multitask

Autistic people cannot change task at a moment's notice, so I suggest explaining this and asking if they can schedule times to speak to you about tasks. Then you can put it on a calendar with a reminder set, to make sure you are ready when you need to listen.

when im asked a question, I like trying to explain the whole thing or at least make an attempt to share understanding.

I was the same when I was working (I'm retired now). I was praised many times for how well I explained things. I would suggest you ask for clarity about why they want you to keep things brief, when improving the knowledge and understanding of co workers is usually a positive thing?

I also understand about dropping into conversation - sometimes I would really want to put forward my point of view, or correct something I knew wasn't quite right, but it's best to try to stay out of it. Perhaps using noise cancelling headphones would help with this?

Too confident when wrong? I'm not sure I understand that. If you are saying you don't know something and guessing when you're on the phone to a customer perhaps that would be a problem - in which case you need clarification about the script they'd prefer you to use in that case. If you're saying it to colleagues, I can't personally see the problem as you're just being honest.

Attention to detail can be difficult when you're time pressured. I'd suggest making a to do list and then prioritising tasks. I find that ticking things off as you finish them gives a sense of achievement and can help.keep your mind clearer.

Neatness is something that you can get into a habit of. Try scheduling some time each day to tidy up.and organise stuff.

I hope that I've understood your issues correctly, and hope that has given you some ideas.

Yeah this, normally people drop in an out to my boss, but at the same time, its only an arms reach away or i've heard it two bays aways. But they also tend to ask me the same if not similar question a bit in the future. but I got pulled up on this recently as a example. I raise my hand now because it was something i was told off for during education. (Espically in maths).

I get this, there is sometimes alot of snap shot decisions which I can be okay with as long as I'm given a reason and its urgency. I've seen my confimation form and it does also state asking questions at appropriate times and the likes, but where I am a junior, I want to learn, so my questions may come off more as an interigation or argumentive. I'm Okay at catching my self esspiaclly when I can't reword or phrase things.

Think this might be a comms issue, I normally say when I don't know something or have very little knowledge like "I don't know but if i was to guess, it might be X"

This has been very insightful. I'm going to try and put these into practise.
