Autism and Medical Cannabis

Hello

It's apparently been entirely legal to possess and consume cannabis if a doctor prescribes it since 2018.

My clinic is Alternaleaf. They wanted my GP record and my autism diagnosis statement. They then wanted a brief chat with a psychiatrist via a mobile video call. It was an easy conversation and the fee is £5 per month I believe. I told them I'd read the clinical literature (Pete Walker and John Bradshaw) The psychiatrist then prescribed ,me 20g per month of flower and a small cartridge. It's all expensive, but it's made my life a great deal happier. More energy in general and it's easier to be cheerful around people.

Fully legal, I've spoken with Edinburgh police to confirm. I hope this information helps sufferers!

  • I’ve wondered about that. Legality varies between states here in America. But even if it is legal for me to do it in my state the problem is my job would be at stake since they require a clean drug test to work.

  • Thankfully just have to navigate UK law. I got the prescription in October 2025 I think and tested things out by just walking around Westminster. You occasionally get some minor hassle and you sometimes feel like you need to do it outside (law essentially is that nobody can bother you if you're behaving reasonably, as it's prescribed medication. British employers cannot discriminate, or it's an Equality Act violation.

The interesting thing is that it makes autism visible in the UK. The clinic sold me a 'Mighty Medic', so this is medical equipment that essentially shows I am autistic because a doctor gave it to me after going through the clinical pathway!

Hopefully US law changes after Britain's successful trial since 2018. It's been life changing personally and I'm sure many adults will benefit from the legal changes,

  • It's a vaporiser sold by the clinic. The intent is that it doesn't affect licencing rules, so it can be legally used inside businesses (Edinburgh Licencing aren't aware seemingly). It's not a complicated device, you just measure flower, put it into the chamber then press buttons to make it heat up/regulate temperature. It's pretty robust and can take being knocked about, which is good when you can be sucking on it all day in an office or out and about.

The major change is clearly that autism is now going to be visible. Since this is a legal and effective medication when combined with psychotherapy, autistic adults in the UK will now become visible just based on having access. Employers and businesses therefore can no longer argue that they could not have known a person is autistic, so it'll be easier for the autistic population to be assertive. Fun for the lawyers.

    The clinic is: https://www.alternaleaf.co.uk/

The pharmacy is https://www.montu.uk/pharmacy where I bought it after being accepted. They have cheaper options also.

Clearly cannabis is going to be prescribed for other conditions, but if you see someone with one then you can take a reasonable guess before talking to them. Because one lacks the (arguably vestigial) primate hierarchy network thing, it just makes your brain work faster. Really good if you want to systematize relationship dynamics quickly.

Can you give some more information on this product please? The links that appear on search results show it simply as a vape device so I'm curious how autism has been linked to it.

The results also seem to be mostly US based - do you have any from UK sources?
