Following PIP assessment i went into a shutdown and panic attack at the same time - thankfully i was in a public space where their were people that kept me safe until i had recovered. What are peoples experiences of this happening at the same time?

Please do not answer if it triggers you.

  • I've had responses to people "assessing" me - i.e. taking a snap shot of a particular facet of me that have dumped me into a world of mental distress too.  For this reason I feel your distress too

I think there are aspects of the mismatch one might have from self perception versus how others see one.  This can be a right nightmare because there are aspects of self which maybe one hasn't been too keen to acknowledge they are present (masking from oneself as it where).  The "bare facts" as others see us can be really cruel - especially if this is presented from a neurotypical perspective of identifying "deficits" or "defects".

The thing is that everyone has a range of reactions/responses and behaviours that vary according to how much stress one is experiencing at the time perhaps.

That in your case a PIP assessment pushed you into panic attack would suggest that perhaps you might already have been existing really close to the edge of capability to deal with mental and emotional stressors.

I wonder if you have come across the Window of Tolerance - Autism Understood model for how much stress one is able to accommodate  ?  If you would permit me a suggestion please - perhaps you might consider the events in that context.
