Targeting ADHD or ASD

Hi, I had an ADHD and adult autism diagnosis 6 months ago. I’m taking an SNRI for depression and have been for years. Generally I am coping ok, the diagnosis helps me navigate challenges e.g anything new that makes me anxious and it helps my partner too, to understand why I might be struggling at times. It helps to be able to think ok this is hard right now, ADHD and or ASD are triggering and making me feel afraid, I may just need some more time to evaluate the real risks, before I react.

I don’t know however, to what extent the ADHD or the ASD dominate. I also don’t know whether to request to try different meds as nothing I take targets ADHD or ASD. The SNRI helps, but at times I struggle to be motivated and just want to sleep. I feel at times I’m moderating a symptom, rather than resolving anything. Any advice/experiance would be appreciated.

  • There is no drug you can take for ASD. It's a wiring difference, your brain is a bit different. Not good or bad, just different. You just have to find ways to cope with the difference.

    The drugs will only treat symptoms, like anxiety. So your feeling is correct.

    If you're sleepy, it's most likely because you're tired. Certain activities take more mental effort and coping with the wiring difference can be tiring.

    For ADHD it is possible for drugs or stimulants (caffeine, etc.) to help some people. But any drugs should be discussed with your GP or psychiatrist.
