Memory loss and autism?

Hi everyone!

Has anyone suffered memory loss? What did you do to receive treatment?

I have experienced significant memory loss over a two-year period and it's been a difficult process trying to get the right help. I'm sorting out my physical health and I have come to realise I am suffering many symptoms of stress-induced exhaustion disorder and memory loss, which sadly entails not remembering parts of my life. I'm getting flashbacks and I've decided to act on them to find out who I am, reconnect with people I know as I live in social isolation, and become more active again.

I have been referred to see a psychologist and to receive residential support.

After having done some research on mental health, I realise I have many symptoms of autism and I will ask to have that looked into.

Has anyone had experience of full recovery with memory loss?

Have a great day!

  • There are many potential causes of memory loss and age is the most common, but long term stress is another.

We cannot offer medical advice so I would recommend speaking to your GP and get the referrals needed to have a professionals assess you.

I note that autism assessments have a muti-year waiting list in most regions although you can ask for a Right To Choose option in most areas (not Scotland though) which can get you on a faster track.

    Good luck

  • Hi Ian! Thanks for your message! I’ve been exposed to long-term stress so that is certainly a factor causing memory loss. I was curious to hear how people in this community have dealt with it, if they wish to share their experience.

I’ll speak to a professional about my symptoms. Thanks for the information about the Right to Choose.

    Have a great day!

Just to clarify, this is only available in England (so also not Wales or Northern Ireland).

  • Thanks for clarifying Bunny! I’m overseas now but when I return to the UK, I’ll be living in England so that’s important information for me to be aware of.

    Have a lovely day!
