Irrational fears!

My neighbour, who lives just across the street, was robbed 5 minutes ago. The burglars got in by a small kitchen-window she'd left open. She was in the house, her car was parked outside, but they didn't care! They got in, took some things quickly and ran away.

My neighbourhood is a very peaceful place where we can leave windows open like she did. What happened today isn't expected to happen again soon. But I'm now getting obsessed over this, and I'm going to start checking around my yard and waking up at night to check again because of a stupid noise, etc.

Does anyone else get obsessed like this over irrational fears?

What do you do to get over it?

  • Good morning,

Was the police contacted immediately after the incident? It might be a good idea to check on the person involved to see if they are okay and suggest that they keep the window closed when it’s unattended, to prevent any further risks.

One of my friends had a close call with a burglary recently; the intruder used a piece of wire to fish the keys through the letterbox. Thankfully, her husband, who is a nurse, noticed and chased after the intruder, which startled them enough to flee. They also have a young daughter, which is why I make it a point to keep my bag in the front room, easily accessible but also out of reach from anyone who might try to break in.

I find that I often wake up at night at the faintest sound, constantly checking that everything is secure around the house. At one point, having a teddy bear in the window gave me some peace of mind, as it felt like a friendly presence watching over me.

How do you cope with these feelings? I often remind myself that I am safe and find comfort in cuddling my teddy bear when anxiety creeps in.

I hope you find these details helpful.

Yes, they came immediately and searched around but they didn't find anything. Just a pile of stuff that they used in order to climb and reach the window. They must have been there for at least 10 minutes in order to make that "ladder", and nobody show anything. And we were all around here.

I do that too. So you can imagine how often I'll be doing it now.
