Eating Disorders

I wonder how many people here have suffered, are currently suffering with/ recovering from an eating disorder? For 11 years of my life I had an ED, anorexia then bulimia, (age 13 - 24). I am now 27 and have been "free" from it for 3 years thanks to a lot of therapy. I was only diagnosed with autism last year (age 26) and wonder how much being diagnosed earlier might have saved me struggling from the ED. Anyone had a similar experience?

I am setting up an Eating Disorder Support Group in Horsham, West Sussex. It will be on Tuesday evenings 7pm - 8pm at St Mark's Church Hall, Horsham. The first meeting is on 15th April 2025. I want to help other people going though the same thing that I went through.

  • Philippa_C98 I am glad that you are in recovery. Eating disorders are hellish and do a lot of damage so I am glad you are working on this. I would recommend you to see Hope Virgo's work who has recovered from an eating disorder as well and is an activist voice today.

I suffer from an eating disorder myself and have done so since 14 and am 52 today and it has greatly impacted on my life and I have complications. It can steal joy from your life. Keep on going so this doesn't happen to you. I am diagnosed with autism as well.

Good luck with the group. It is a really positive thing you are doing. Have you ever thought doing one online as well like with Zoom.

  • Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your experience with eating disorders. I am so sorry to hear about how much joy it has stolen from you - I definitely relate to this. I agree that recovery is so worth it - I was lucky enough to see some specialist ED therapists that really aided my recovery. The ED Support Group is going well so far - it has been such a lovely safe community. I have turned the meetings into hybrid meetings, so some people attend in person and others on Zoom. This model has worked surprisingly well. If you (or anybody else you know who is struggling) would like to attend on Zoom - this is the meeting link:

    Passcode: Welcome

We meet 7pm-8pm Tuesdays (UK time). No pressure for attendees to have cameras on or to speak if they don't want to.
