Online Therapy

I have been wanting to try therapy again for the longest time. The only issue for me is that I am far more sincere with my answers over message/web-chats that are purely typing. Does anybody know of any free therapy sites?

Obviously, I am autistic, I really struggle with my social phobia and leaving the house can be a challenge.

  • Some colleges offer low rate talking therapies where part-qualified counsellors undertake some work under supervision as part of their study programme.  I've seen charges for as little as £5 per session.  I don't particularly agree as I do feel there should be a level playing field, but it may be an option and alternative for some to look into if they faced a very long waiting list and simply couldn't afford private therapy.

  • I don't know whether everyone on this site is from UK but assuming you are, the only way I'm aware that you can get free therapy is through NHS. I think there's some places that might give you a session for free but that's about it. NHS have a service that is a guided self help thing - in some areas you can self refer but it doesn't involve someone giving you therapy, just someone that monitors your progress. I have been offered therapy online through NHS because of how long I've waited, I don't know how common that is though. Obviously wait times are long on NHS.

Only other option I can think of is getting it through access to work but you'd have to either be in work or aiming to be in a place where you could work to use that option.

  • I think it's a trust thing combined with a fear of the unknown.   I used to hate the idea of CBT (group therapy) and only wanted 1 to 1 counselling but then I tried it and liked it...

Thing is.  Only once did I get a therapist that I thought ...... Oh God no, I wont get on with this person...  I think you instinctively know if they'll be okay, and most are reasonably good.

    I wish you well

  • I understand what you mean, but I have such a problem looking at people. Let alone talking to them about my problems whilst looking at them aha!

I feel like my best bet would be to go through to the GP and ask about online therapies I could be referred to.

    Thank you.

  • I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying if you did therapy you'd rather it be online than face to face as well?

  • I'm the other way about.  I don't think I'd engage properly with therapy that wasn't face to face.  I think I'd want to see some sort of facial reaction in the person I'm speaking to - just to acknowledge they are listening and computing what I'm saying.  I don't think an online service would provide that.

However, you can normally access Primary Care therapies (including Talking therapies) by applying direct to the provider or approaching your GP.   There will likely be a waiting list, but they do offer online therapies these days in many areas, so you'd not need to leave home.

    Good Luck.

  • Zoom seems to have taken over everything, personally I would do any therapy either as a client or a counsellor online
