What Mental health support services are available in UK?

Hi,

I am having serious problems accesing mental health services as they all want nothing to do with you once you are diagnosed with autism.

What NHS mental health services are available / accessible to adults in the UK after they have been diagnosed with autism. Do not say Talking Therapies. They are a useless waste of time.

When you get diagnosed with Autism it just seems like the NHS mental health services completely washes their hands with you and wants nothing to do with you to help.

Does anyone currently see the community mental health teams for autism help. If so how did you manage it?

  • I don’t know what type of mental health help you want after diagnosis. If you are asking for help with the challenges of being autistic the links on this NAS website might direct you to where you can find support. Some areas of the UK have support groups and local autism charities so it might be worth searching online.

If you have a mental health difficulty, eg. something like anxiety or depression, I don’t think there is a separate mental health service.

  • No, ASC falls between the cracks of mental health and educational needs, there are some local groups who offer support, but they're not everywhere and are of varying quality, mostly seeming to help you get the right benefits.

What help do you feel you need that the mental health team could offer?

  • Both my son and myself got CBT on the NHS (we’re both autistic). It was provided by an out sou private company in my case - and it was helpful. My son had CBT directly from NHS staff - and it went on for months - but he didn’t benefit from it.
