Self Harm and Suicidal thoughts and ideation

ex self harmer here,(been clean for 18 months and 3 days, which is my record so far!), in the past 2 / 3 years, i've had a few really bad mental health experiences due to personal reasons, and dduring those difficult times, i was really starting to Self harm and thinking abiut suicide (with the suicide, it was when i was in really bad burnout and when was in a major meltdown i thought, why not  just end it all,  it got to the extent that i thought of about 7 or 8 ways of ending it all.) is this "normal" and why do i / we feel like this?

  • is this "normal" and why do i / we feel like this?

I'm very sorry to hear of your struggles. According to the NAS:

"Self-harm can affect anyone. Some studies suggest that:

    - Autistic people are more likely to self-harm than non-autistic people
    - Autistic women are more likely to self-harm than autistic men."

"Research suggests that autistic people are at an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts, compared to non-autistic people"

You might find these resources helpful; they explain more about how these issues can affect us as autistic people, and also provide information about strategies that might help with the issues, and how to get help:

    NAS - Self harm

    NAS - Suicide

NAS - Seeking help with mental health
