Arithmomania - Not often mentioned here - Am I the only one diagnosed with it?

I have a diagnosis of ASC, OCD and Arithmomania.

I've discussed ASC at some length on the threads here, but Arithmomania has only come up a few times - and quite some time ago.

Am I the only one here who compulsively counts? When I'm stressed I need to count the number of letters in words, especially the longer ones. I count them forwards and then backwards.  It's a damned nuisance but just has to be done.... over and over again.  When stressed, I will repeatedly count up to a hundred and back again to zero. I never do actual arithmetic, just counting.

Am I alone?

  • Just looked up examples and it looks like I do.

I often find myself unnecessarily counting, for example counting stitches whilst knitting or sewing when not required, counting steps when walking along or climbing stairs. I don't think it is due to anxiety necessarily though. I agree it is annoying.

I also sometimes have to do something a particular number of times in even numbers and apparently waiting for a particular time. I do that when cooking even if food could come out a minute before.

  • Oh yes Homebird, I always end on an even number; it brings a sense of completeness. It's tidy. You just don't get that with odd numbers.
