Arithmomania - Not often mentioned here - Am I the only one diagnosed with it?

I have a diagnosis of ASC, OCD and Arithmomania.

I've discussed ASC at some length on the threads here, but Arithmomania has only come up a few times - and quite some time ago.

Am I the only one here who compulsively counts? When I'm stressed I need to count the number of letters in words, especially the longer ones. I count them forwards and then backwards.  It's a damned nuisance but just has to be done.... over and over again.  When stressed, I will repeatedly count up to a hundred and back again to zero. I never do actual arithmetic, just counting.

Am I alone?

  • Hi Ben so good to see you :)

I'm not diagnosed with this but counting in my head is something I do and I think I've always done it

Especially when I'm stressed and anxious! I was telling my mental health people this the other day actually.

It calms me down i guess because I'm thinking of something else?

I also count when I'm walking with each step I take.

    It's natural for me :)

  • Hello Goosey, it's great to see you back again. Welcome!

Yes, counting's good if you're anxious, many autists here seem to do it. Some recite the alphabet, forwards and backwards. If it helps.... then do it!

    Ben
