Arithmomania - Not often mentioned here - Am I the only one diagnosed with it?

I have a diagnosis of ASC, OCD and Arithmomania.

I've discussed ASC at some length on the threads here, but Arithmomania has only come up a few times - and quite some time ago.

Am I the only one here who compulsively counts? When I'm stressed I need to count the number of letters in words, especially the longer ones. I count them forwards and then backwards.  It's a damned nuisance but just has to be done.... over and over again.  When stressed, I will repeatedly count up to a hundred and back again to zero. I never do actual arithmetic, just counting.

Am I alone?

  • If you insert the word "akittybackitty" seamlessly between each number as you count them, you will be measuring elapsed seconds to a reasonable degree of accuracy...

Hat tip to Mr Gant a physics teacher who told me that back in 1972, and it's been serving me well ever since.

  • I think I will remember that word, whether I want to or not!

Errr... umm... thank you I Sperg... I think.

  • I've been trying not very successfully for years to train myself do counting seconds as a "background service" whilst doing other tasks.

It's useful in certain driving situations. Eg when I hit a traffic average speed zone and some Herbert is driving even slower than the posted AVERAGE, by counting the seconds past the last camera and doing a bit of mintal arifmeiricks I can often find a safe overtake secure in the knowledge that there won't be an unhelpful letter in the post.
