Dysregulation Question

Hello again,

Still quite new to the community, and working to come to terms with a positive ASC diagnosis a fortnight ago. Anyhow, quick question - is a chronic underlying but non-comprehended (i.e. can neither adequately explain, not trace a cause of) sense of being 'off balance'/'disconnected'/'internally noisy'/'unsettled without a reason' an evidence of what is referred to as dysregulation?

Thoughts and/or experiences welcome.

Thanks.

  • Regulation can mean a few things. In NT context, when someone is pushed past a boundary or a limit most also cannot “regulate” well. Society is built around how the majority function, even if philosophers and psychoanalysts might point out there’s a working dysfunction to it. It’s good to recall the NT mind can actually “turn off”, it’s not intaking the world and processing like we are.

So for Au and ADHD, Start with internally noisy. Felix Guattari uses the phrase mise-en-scene, a film/theatre term relating to bringing everything on stage on in the lens all at once

One theory around this is the hyper-sensory brain, or less ability to create  defence mechanisms (due to a language difference) which leave us more vulnerable. So internally and externally it’s “too much” at once. Or sensing life as “too real” - silly terms, but as I work in sound, I think of it like having these really delicate sensors, with incredibly clean cables able to pick up subtle details with less interference. Now, when we couple this with Monotropism- and ability to make hyper connexions or quickly find ourselves in a flow-state (and I believe some things in the concept  might be connected to less resistance biologically, which means being prone to anxiety) it’s easier to see how attempting to “regulate” all this is rather difficult. NTs create Defence Mechanisms (different from Survival Mechanisms) which basically dull the senses, and the difference might just be a different design if “human” for an evolutionary purpose- we have so much further to go in neuroscience.

Anyone pushed beyond their capacity will appear “dysregulated”. So I’ve actually spent years trying to learn grounding ethics and polite rules which express kindness in a relationship or psychological conscious boundaries to allow a social fluidity. When I was young I just thought of myself as an escape artist LOL. I find understanding my limits and getting enough knowledge about how the physics of things impact my biology is helpful, too.

the way NTs “regulate” is subconscious. Much less work. And perhaps in a different environment with different expectations, we’d have no problem with regulation and the majority might often find themselves “dysregulated”. I think Covid lockdown was a glimpse into that.
