Autism and eating disorders

Does anyone have experience with eating disorders and autism?

I have struggled with anorexia for the past 9 years, and I believe I may be autistic (in the process of being diagnosed). I think the autistic traits/tendencies have made it harder to recover from the eating disorder, and that is why I always seem to fall back into the disordered patterns and behaviours. I just wonder if anyone else has experienced both and how they have influenced one another in your journey.

- Thank you!

  • I'm currently doing therapy for ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder) and yeah it seems like the autism is a driving force in that.

My therapist said autism traits like kinda increased sensory stuff and tendency to connect dots and try to make sense of terrifying experiences (like I ate this thing and things got scary, so therefore that's the cause and I won't do that to stay safe... but then the bad experiences keep coming and I stop eating more and more things until I've stopped eating entirely) are wrapped up pretty tightly in this whole mess.

Good luck in your recovery. It really really sucks to have issues with something we need to deal with every single day.

  • Thank you for your response! It is so tiring. I hope your recovery goes okay, good luck :)
