Hi there,
If you work in a sit down, officey kind of job, what are your adjustments?
Ive recently got a Job! I've really landed on my feet with it- it's in marketing which I enjoy and it's well paid! I'll admit, I got it through getting lucky with family connections.
It's my first office job and as excited as I am, one month in, Im really struggling. My diagnosis is in autism and adhd. My biggest problem at work is executive functioning. I get to work three days a week from home which is great because I can shamelessly have my blanket, hoodie, weighted bear on my lap and any temperature I like etc. Even then, I still struggle to get work done.
Switching between tasks is a takes 15 at least. I'm distracted by every little thing, sounds, colours etc. We have flexible hours which is amazing because I have 24 hours every day to get 8 hours of work done but it really does take all that time for me. on top of this, all my effort goes into trying to keep up which means my house is a mess, I'm struggling to eat right, I'm moving house in 3 days and I haven't packed a thing!! some days, despite working all day, I get NOTHING done.
This is an amazing opportunity that I don't want to miss out on because of my autism. I know I'm capable- sometimes the work even seems too easy- my autism and adhd just gets in the way!
My manager is so kind and has adhd herself. I told her I'm struggling and she has carved an hour out of my schedule today so that i can research reasonable adjustments that might make things easier for me but Ive never had an office job and I'm struggling to think of solutions! Any suggestions?
