Therapy - ASD specialists, do they even exist? What the best approach?

Hi all,

I'm recently diagnosed and it was recommended that I connect with a therapist/psychologist.   In particular a CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapist).  But wouldn't it be better to speak to someone who understands Autism spectrum conditions?  I wonder if going to a therapist who is unaware of the challenges of autism would be a waste of (far too much) money.   Any advice would be welcome.  Is there even such as thing as an autism specialist in psychology?

I'm based in Belgium, but I'd be happy to do online session with a UK based therapist if there is someone really good.

  • There are definitely therapists who specialise in working with autistic people or neurodivergent people more generally, though you might have to research them fairly extensively to know whether their specialism is in actually understanding what we need versus trying to make us 'more normal'. My personal experience has been that a therapist who is ND themselves will be most likely to have the right insight and understanding.
