Methods of releasing pent up energy (both positive and negative energy)

What methods do you have of releasing the energy and feelings that build up throughout the day/week/month etc.?

If stimming is what I need to do, I pace back and forth relentlessly, play with my hands or I touch my face a lot. It depends on the subtlety required really.

At the end of a day I like to lift weights. This serves two purposes for me. Firstly It helps me physically express the turmoil of the day and allows my body to match the tiredness of my mind. The second function is that it allows me to feel something that I can actually pinpoint and see the cause and effect. When you lift weights to failure, it hurts (in a positive way). I can then identify this feeling and cause, where as a lot of what happens during a busy day can often go unnoticed and be hard to understand later.

Im asking as I’ve had a very overstimulating day of unplanned sensory demands, but I’m determined to proactively work through it. This is my written part.

Id be interested in reading your strategies and seeing the varied responses to this potentially shared experience.

Take care.

  • Since being here, I have read that a lot of us tend to pace a lot. In my life out of here, it was often joked about for me. It was after diagnosis where I understood that I did this so much and, more importantly, why. Part of my difficult day was having to sit still for a very long time in a stressful environment where pacing would have helped a lot.
