Autistic Burnout and How to Cope

Hi,

I've been experiencing depression for the past three months, but now I'm realising that I'm experiencing autistic burnout. All I want to do is stay in bed. I recently had four weeks off from work due to my depression. While that helped a little, I had to go back to work due to financial reasons. I've talked to my manager since being back and my work schedule is better next month, but I still don't have time for the things I enjoy. My physical health hasn't been good for the past two years and I've been diagnosed with arthritis. I'm just so exhausted and I don't know how to cope. Any advice for getting out of autistic burnout?

Thanks,

Kaleigh

Hi Kayleigh, my coping mechanism is the same as yours - I go into hibernation, lots of bed time and only the bare minimum of outside time. I'm currently there now, and will probably spend almost the whole weekend hiding.

Have you tried swimming? It's gentle exercise that you can do alone and the water changes the sound of the world in a way I find comforting. Physical activity is a wonderful way to lower stress which is important when dealing with burnout. It might also be helpful for your arthritis...
