Thinking hard about dropping out

Has anyone thought about dropping out of society, I’m considering disappearing to try an live a simple life.
How would somebody disappear in the modern world?
what steps would you need to take make it successful?

  • Yep - I think about that too- I even had a crazy escape plan that I was quite serious about ... I wanted to train as a hiking guide ... but then injury ruined all of it... and I haven’t hiked since. Hiking for me is an escape. Ideally somewhere without much service. I do like meeting people on hikes- I’ve connected extremely well with people in mountain huts- for me hiking is freedom. I used to go on backpacking trips each year before injury-  My favourite was the GR20 in Corsica- stunning landscapes, extremely isolated (huts mostly get food via mule or helicopter), barely any service, lovely people- I had the time of my life

but escape plans can actually happen! My aunt did it! She moved to Portugal to the sea, now gives massages to earn a living and has completely changed her life- many of her friends and familyback home were so negative about it ... I don’t understand why- I think it is amazing she went with what made her happy - though she was lucky as she is able to put her job on hold for 3 years so she knows if it doesn’t work out she could come back to her old job at least for first 3 years...

i hope more escape/disappearing plans happen for all of us

  • My other dream escape plan (again if not limited by injury) would be to simply pack my tent and hiking pack and head off- take on a temporary job when i run out of money, then just keep going- I met someone that walked from Paris to the Sahara desert in this manner- apparently it’s doable
