Question if there should be at least six month deration for personality disorders

Should there be a six month deration for personality disorders? Personality Disorders shouldn't have to be life long, it just has to be chronic, long-term pattern of maladaptive inner experience and sense of self, age onset is late adolescent 16+.

Although, I made an argument that personality disorders shouldn't be diagnosed until age 26 and six months, to make sure that not only are personalities developed, but until your brain is completely rewired and stops growing.

  • Not sure I understand the question, really. PDs as I understand it start to emerge in adolescence, although I agree professionals shouldn't jump to conclusions about their existence and they need to be assessed for over time. I also think you are right that they probably shouldn't be diagnosed too young. Some kids are just hormonal or don't yet have the wisdom and restrain to deal with life's problems, albeit they'll get there.

I do worry that too many people get that label when the problem is actually something else.
