new mental health bill

this new mental health bill is hopefully a step in the right direction and will prevent people with autism being detained in mental health units being sectioned but i wonder what for those of us who have a mental health diagnosis and autism.  a mental health hospital is never the place for someone with autism i can say with experience those places are traumatic.   with no understanding of autism, so for some with autism as their only diagnosis this new bill hopefully will be positive but for others with a diagnosis of both i guess they will again be forgotton

  • Yes, I'm cheering too because once on the statute, people will no longer be hospitalised and medicated just because they are autistic.

However, what I'd also like to see for people who happen to be autistic but who are also poorly enough to genuinely need to be in hospital a while, are specialist wards better suited to the sensory and social needs of autistic people, staffed by people who understand autism, or who are autistic themselves, who understand the relationship between neurodivergence and mental and physical health, who will work earnestly to make their patient's stay as brief as possible, but with proper support when they are discharged.

I think at present the service understands way too little.
