Sertraline - Increasing the dose?

After a bit of a break, I was restarted on Sertraline a few weeks ago. The plan had been for me to take 50mg each day for the first week, and then increase to 100mg. Once I started on the increased dose, I felt wiped out, which I had found to be a major inconvenience. After a fortnight of feeling like this, I had then decided to reduce the dose back down to 50mg.

Whilst I understand that Sertraline is an anti-anxiety medication and not a heavy-duty anti-depressant, I am now questioning if I should increase the dose back up to 100mg due to feeling emotionally distressed. I'm thinking that if I can get back to that place of feeling wiped out, it might result in making me more prone to sleeping for longer, thus enabling me to at least have some respite from my emotional distress.

  • I hope it goes well for you this time. I came off it, and later Venlaxafine, due to side-effects that a lot of other seem lucky enough not to get. Chiefly weight gain (which I think may have permanently moved my metabolic set point) and restless limbs at all hours of the day and night. I think I also just became resistant to its initially calming effects, and within a few months was just as anxious as ever. Now I have valium for 'emergency' (though in actuality, regular, if carefully rationed) use - just to help take the edge off. Any small difference helps.

  • Thanks Shardovan. For what it's worth, my plan appears to have backfired somewhat. I mean, I'm sleeping, just not for as long as I would like to be. Admittedly, my expectations had perhaps been unrealistic. I had rather been hoping that I would feel so wiped out that I'd end up spending a greater proportion of my time sleeping than awake.
