How did people (late diagnosed) broach the subject of Autism with their GP?

I am going to have to see a GP, I can't continue like I am at the moment, having a meltdown in a gym is not recommended, thankfully someone was able to bring me back before it got too bad, by just talking to calmly to me.

I am now beating myself up mentally as I let myself be what I consider weak, I am very good at not letting my mask slip in front of others, if it has too, it is done in private.

I am just wondering how people approached this with their GP and what their experiences were?

  • Hello, I started the journey in December, what happened to you in the gym was you most probably just being over stimulated or stressed, your not being weak, your just starting to realise who you are and the condition that you may have.

After the lightbulb moment my head was trying to process years of, “ is this why I’m different and didn’t fit in”.

Sorry, where you need to start is obviously make an appointment with your gp, I can’t do telephone appointments or video calls so I used the NHS app and booked an in person appointment. I had to wait about two weeks, that gives time to start making notes of how you feel and what affects you. Make bullet points so you don’t freeze.  I think I blurted out over 50 years of my life in 10 minutes.  I was going faster than my gp could type. He stopped and said that I needed to be referred for an asd diagnosis. There will be some forms afterwards, they are quite straightforward. I’m now on the 2-3 year waiting list!

good luck with whatever you decide.
