Newly diagnosed asd at 31

Hi, bit of background story. My daughter 10 years old was diagnosed in December with autism after a bit of a battle with anxiety which led to school refusal. Anyway I’ve just been diagnosed today myself with asd I’ve suffered with severe anxiety but it’s been awful lately. Every other week I’m physically poorly, aching bones, sore throat, blocked nose just so generally unwell I’ve always wondered why as there was no explanations but after being diagnosed today and a chat with the psychologist he explained it was down to me having to mask to socialise as 3 days a week I have a tutor in my home to teach my daughter, most of the 3 days my daughter refuses as she struggles to communicate but the tutor still sits for atleast an hour up and down stairs trying to get my daughter to engage it is a bit of a battle and by the end of the week I’m physically drained and poorly as we have other appointments throughout the week for both my self and my daughter. Does anyone else ever feel like this? And if so what do you guys do to help with this? Thank you.

  • Hi, thank you for your reply Alisha. Now I’ve got the diagnosis I’m going to explain to people how poorly I get by the end of the week so hopefully things change because it’s draining. It’s awful having to mask and pretend your someone your not. Hope things are better for you now always here for a chat.

  • Hi,

I have experienced illness due to masking, however not to your extreme. I am 17 so still in school and after about 3 weeks of term, I would develop a cold which would gradually get worse until the holidays where I could stop masking and then the process would repeat. so, you're not alone. however, i have no advice to offer, after my diagnosis, I stopped masking as much and I don't experience these symptoms anymore.

i hope life gets a little bit easier for you soon, sounds really tough on both of you

    Alisha xx
