anxiety during night

Hi

My anxiety is the worst at night, just as I’m trying to sleep. Lately I’ve been getting the physical symptoms of anxiety (tight chest, breathless, butterflies, restlessness, shaking) without any anxious thoughts. Im used to this during the day because I tend to suppress my thoughts a lot, it doesn’t work all the time but when I occupy my mind I tend to just feel the physical symptoms without the overthinking/worrying. During the night is when I usually get all of the thoughts I’ve been suppressing coming flooding into my head, but I keep having nights where I don’t have the thoughts but I’m in a constant state of anxiety and I’ve found that no matter what grounding/breathing exercises I do those physical symptoms won’t go away and they can last a long time. I’ve tried melatonin, I’ve tried weed, I’ve tried meditating, listening to music, hypnosis, I don’t know what else to do. It’s having a huge impact on my sleep and I’m exhausted during the day.

  • ah when you go to bed at night you have that time without distraction that your brain uses to think on everything even weird stuff no matter how far off in your past.

not sure how to change that especially if weed doesnt work lol although id imagine weed would make one more hyper like a coffee effect maybe?... have you tried sleeping tablets instead or some form of tranqualiser thing?

  • Lots of ways to be less anxious before going to sleep. Listen to soft relaxing music, don't drink any coffee or sugary drinks a few hours before, do a gentle workout an hour or two before going to sleep. Could also try some meditation that's meant to work wonders. Also a hot bath or shower should make you less tense, just make sure it's not cold or it will make you more awake and alert.

  • What about physical exercise? Not immediately before sleeping, because that may work the opposite direction, but early in the day. It may not work the first time you try but if you manage to keep it I noticed that it helps

  • I have a lot of trouble stepping sometimes overthinking things over and over again. Constantly worrying. How am I going to cope with what's happening. things are always going wrong in my live. I trying so hard to deal with this constant depression constant anxiety.  I  listen to the  audiobooks. that help me to relax and listen to some nice relaxing music.

  • Sleep yoga has helped me. It allows me to feel rested in the day if I can’t sleep because of anxiety. I sometimes practise it when I’m feeling anxious in bed, and put it on my phone to listen to, while I follow the instructions.

Hot baths and showers will only make you more alert and less able to sleep.

  • Anxiety effects me day and night but is worse at night for some reason! I usually do breathing techniques to calm down and ease it.

  • Ive had anxiety a lot at night especially during lockdown, what helped for me was cutting down on eating sweets, chocolate and alcohol, I started doing breathing techniques called wim hof method (search on YouTube)

  • My anxiety and depression is often quite bad at night time. It sort of builds up throughout the day and then goes crazy at night, usually before bed or when I'm trying to fall asleep. I've found the same as you not a lot helps and you just have to deal with it or wait for it to pass which can have a negative effect as it affects your sleep which then makes everything worse and leaves you feeling drained. Something I do which you may like to give a try is having a hot bath or shower before you go to sleep, that can help you de-stress and can calm you right down. I do that when I'm feeling really anxious and it can and does help sometimes. I'm not sure if you drive, I do and if I feel anxious I'll go out for a short drive to clear my head and that helps as well. Obviously don't drive if you feel really tired and like you might fall asleep haha. Talking can be a big help as well, so you could always message us here or call someone to chat to. If it becomes a big problem for you then see your GP and see what they suggest to help you. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hope things get better for you :)
