Hi

I am Mum of Ellie 7 and Jack nearly 4. As a family we have been going around in such big circles for around 18 months - Jack's next step is a speech and language assesment prior to a detailed ASD assessment....any insight would be appreciated? I feel we have all been down such a long rocky path to get here, but I am not stopping now...my little fella needs us

  • Hi, my daughter is on the spectrum and was diagniagnosed about two years ago. Theres nothing to worry about. She had to do the same and the lady who did the s and l assessment was great. It doesnt take long but the ASD essessment will take about 6 weeks. This 6 weeks will involve you taking Jack to a child devlopment center to be assessed by a team of specialists to determine the outcome. this will usualy be 1 day in the week for the 6 weeks and the team will assess the 3 areas of impairment that Autistic children have. These areas are impairment of social communication social integration and social imagination. they will also require reports from areas where Jack spends time like playgroups and schools. The assessments for the 6 weeks is not intrusive and they will stand back and observe. I know exactly how you feel i have been down your road. If Jack has an ASD there is a course you can do to make yourself more aware of it. It is run y the center of excellence for £150 but if you have a woucher log in you can get it for £30. Its well worth doing even if Jack is not on the spectrum.
