newly diagnosed

Hi

I am the mother of an 11 year old boy who has very recently been diagnosed with high functioning autism.

Our journey started when he was in playschool when the staff there had concerns about him and his behaviours, but it has taken this long to finally get a full diagnosis.  Part of the reason it has taken so long is that my son did not cope in school, and so eventually about 18 months ago we took him out for his sanity (and ours) and he is now being home educated.  We were just starting to go through a referral process at that time on the direction of the school, but then when we took him out of the school they were really awkward and didn't want to know and althought they kept promising to write a supporting letter so we could get an assessment they never did. Anyway -to cut a very long story short, we eventually have had a paediatrician appointment and have finally had a diagnosis, and just came on to say hi really.

  • Hello SherylW

You are not alone in your difficulties. There are many parents who have posted on this site after having problems with an education system that has not supported their Autistic children.

The Parents and Carers, and Education forums are good place to look next... as you have probably already discovered.

    Welcome.
