Hello I'm new

Hello, nice to meet you all

Was officially diagnosed as autistic on the 31st October after going through assessment with a private clinic in Glasgow. Feel relived about it to be honest as I have always suspected that I had it since whenever I look back on moments from my childhood, teenage years, and early adult years, it is clear that I demonstrated noticeable traits. For example, being terrified of hand dryers in public bathrooms up until the age of 10 because of the noise they made or not being able to tie my shoelaces until I was around 11. It is a relief to actually have the diagnosis as I always faced struggles because of my autism whether it was academically in subjects at school, being able to throw the ball properly or tackle during Rugby at PE, applying for jobs, failing at job interviews because of my body language, and making friends. Interesting fact about me is I love trains. Was a huge Thomas The Tank Engine fan from ages 1-6, and I now visit Heritage Railways or Museums containing vintage steam and diesel engines.

  • Hello and welcome,

Pleased to hear that absorbing your assessment has been a relief, as this is not always the case.

I can empathise with your hand-dryer thing - I do not like the noise. Also, playing sports. I have very ever rarely run as I lose my sense of balance and never could understand 20ish people running around knowing what they were doing. I can't catch things unless I am sitting or standing still.

Railways have been a love of my life for about 70 years though I lost some interest after the demise of UK steam in 1968. I did continue a while, seeing all but 1 of the Deltics and lots of Westerns, Warships, Brush 4s, etc. I can recall so many preserved locos either working in the 1950-60s or at Woodham's scap yard. Now, I am into 009 gauge model railways. It's a lot warmer!
