Hi! I am new :)

Hi everyone!

I am Holly, a 22 year old woman. I was diagnosed with autism a few months ago now and I have been coming to terms with what it means for me.

It has definitely helped in the sense that I now understand myself so much better and feel more comfortable explaining why specific things bother me/make me super happy etc.

Although, looking back at my childhood/watching childhood videos makes me feel sad for my younger self. It is clear that I wasn’t properly understood and I wish that there was more understanding and awareness of autism in girls when I was younger.

Does anyone else relate? Also, does anyone have any top tips for accommodating your needs etc?

  • Hi Holly, and welcome. Lots of us here, each with our own story. I was diagnosed last year and it has helped me too, although the recoding of what, in my case, was 59 years of male lived experience was challenging for me. I did find myself grieving for my younger self and doing work to nurture that younger me to facilitate healing.

You will find your own groove and the insight I would pass on is to trust your instinct on whether an accommodation is working for you, whilst preserving the curiosity and playfulness to try things out. Hope that helps and see you around this community, which has proven important for me.
