Recently diagnosed

Hi everyone, just joined the community having been diagnosed as autistic at the age of 50 after a 4 year wait on the NHS waiting list.  Still digesting things at the moment, and working out how to tell work colleagues, friends (the very few that I have) and others I'd like to tell. Any suggestions welcome.

Have been spending a lot of time thinking about what might have been had I been diagnosed much earlier in life, but I know I can't change the past, but I can influence the future. I'm fortunate that I have a good job that I enjoy and have good support from my line managers.

  • Hi and Welcome,

Congratulations upon your assessment. 4 years is such a long wait. I am in my 70s and diagnosed this year too.

The usual post-diagnosis advice is to just take your time and be kind to yourself. You seem to be doing these already.

However, it has taken me several months to come to terms with my assessment and I am still discovering new things, such as alexithymia. I found my assessment was not just a document but quite a seismic shift in how I now viewed myself, the world, the past, present and future. All this took time; initially, I was just feeling a bit empty and stuck. If I was you I would wait a while before telling others, as I might feel different in a few months’ time.
