New Here and Don't have an official diagnosis

Hey everyone, I'm new to this website/forum and just want to introduce myself. I don't have an official autism diagnosis, more depression and crippling social anxiety, but I seem to fit many of the criteria for autism and my younger brother and father are both autistic so I likely am as well.

I am a 27 year old man with no friends, no social life and no job and I still live with my parents, so making friends is a bit difficult for me. I struggle with self confidence issues but would like to begin making friends, even if they are online for now.

My family are helpful and supportive, but I am a romantic at heart and would desperately like a girlfriend and wife, something my autism and self confidence issues don't help with. I am here to start socialising in a secure environment as a start on this road.

My interests would probably be considered stereotypical for autistic men, being video games, reading, trains (particularly steam), model railways and history.

  • Hi and welcome,

I find this a comfortable environment and hope you do too. I like steam engines too and am old enough to rembember mainline steam services pre 1968.  I am very slowly building a 009 module but I get too distracted by other hobbies!

Hope you enjoy your time here.

  • Thank you for the welcome, I hope to find this a comfortable environment as well, especially for socialisation, something I don't get enough of in real life. With regards to the steam engines, I'm jealous of those who could see them put through their paces on the mainline. The closest I can get is the mainline rail tours, but they are limited to 75mph.

With regards to the 009 module, do you mean a 9mm narrow gauge model?

  • I like your "tangible and real". It sort of echoes my thoughts that you used to be able to see and hear how a railway worked.  Rolling stock , scenery, etc. is so realistic these days but the prices aren't!

  • I spend a lot of time visiting heritage railways whenever I can, and I can understand that. I do like the semaphore signals, they look a lot more, I don't know how to explain it properly but the best way I can phrase it is that they look tangible and real, rather than just a red light/green light. And oh god do I hate the electric wires that are above almost every railway line in Britain, especially with the bright silver of the steel gantries. I also don't like how quiet electric trains can be, I prefer the noise of a locomotive, diesel or steam, whereas electric trains are almost silent.

I buy 00 gauge model railways whenever I can (probably too much), but I don't have the room to do a full model and layout sadly. I'd like to but I just don't have the room in my house.

  • Scale (00) 4 mm to 1 ft (305 mm) on Track gauge (N) 9mm.

The thing I miss about my steam days is the atmosphere, semaphore signalling, the air of neglect and scruffiness, the rail joint noise, the absence of electrification, etc.
