Hi

Thought i'd best introduce myself (even though I joined here months ago and just forgot to ever post), I'm Alastair, 45 from Derbyshire, UK and as yet diagnosed formally as autistic though am on a wait list for an assessment via my local NHS trust (4 years and counting). Definitely a geek, big into PC gaming and all things Discworld!

  • Hi im recently diagnosed, I was able to choose harley street, they was very fast, it was actually me that took about. 3 months to do all the forms. Most are non savable files, so ask for saveable versions then you can go back and worth. I had a bad break down yesterday and messaged them expecting a reply this week, but they messaged me back virtually straight away and my assessor got the email also and set up a Google meeting, to speak with me. All in a Sunday which is mad. I'm ngl I did procrastinate, due to the dreaded maybe its just me idea , 9/10 it isn't just you, lol.

So see if you can go with them, as finding out has been a blessing,a relieve, and for the first time in 30yrs I'm not masking, im allowing myself to feel these emotions, see which are reacuring, so when I have my appointment with the GP, I can give them a list and use it along side the suggestions my assessor made.

You will get their, but I feel unlike me you've always know but getting help with out a formal diagnosis would and is hard. Unlike me who is adhd, and thought it's just my adhd or my anxiety, then I moved out thought it was again just my anxiety or adhd, it gradually got worse, and my GP suggested I get assessed. Looking back now knowing the support I can get, if it had been picked up sooner, how different my life could of been, education, relationships work, but I got through it barely but I did. So pat yourself on the back, you've made it this far, don't give up. But do see if you can go with another institute, oh and when you get to the choosing the assessor part, get a family member to look them up and then give you bullet points on them,  mine isn't a doctor she's an nurse, but has some amazing experiences in the fields, she sounded warm and caring, which by the above you can tell she is, and she has an autistic friend.

She also mentioned Facebook groups for those with autism, that might be helpful, I've not joined any yet, but if you find a good one let me know.
