intro & question

Hello, I'm a young adult with a question I'm wondering.

How did people on here approach the subject of Autism with Dr's etc?

My question is related to my current circumstances - not wishing to go too deep into it.

I'm going from an health assessment I had back in July 2022 & a phone interview I had with Rethink, that was for a report into treatment of young adult with mental health, both asked if I had tests for disorders such as autism.

I am now wondering how to approach the topic with medical professionals - surely if I rock up & ask for tests for  a certain disorder, wouldn't this be viewed as suss.

How is it approached?

Parents
  • As a young person, I remember being acutely worried about what others thought of me!  How I wanted to be the confident, dashing young fellow who could navigate the world without a care, as everyone else seemed to be doing.  Two things I now know: everyone else had their own baggage they were lugging around; they were just moderately good at hiding their issues.  And, no one cares about anything other than themselves.  On that second point, get yourself a copy of 'How To Win Friends And Influence People' by Dale Carnegie which is predominantly about sales but is really about interpersonal skills.

So, don't worry, or at least understand that it's mostly your autism that is doing the worrying for you, and go get that assessment.  I wish I had realised all those years ago and had an opportunity to get the diagnosis then.  Don't be like me.
