Anxious new person.

Hello,

I'm normally too nervous to post online but this seems like a safe space, so I'm trying to be brave and give this a go. I hope I can add something worthwhile to the community and make some positive connections.

How have you all found this community? Please share your feelings and experiences with me if you want to.

To do my due diligence:
I was diagnosed as autistic just before my 40th birthday after a long journey of self-discovery.

I like reading sci-fi and fantasy, gaming, trying to make games, mental health, football, cats, macro photography and not having the mental capacity to remember all of the things that I like in one sitting.

  • Good afternoon from America, FriendlyNPC!

I started lurking here years ago when I suspected I was Autistic (I was diagnosed around age 30), then joined about a year ago. I’m not sure if there are any American forums like this one, but this one was easy to find. Actually, the slight cultural differences between here and there have been fascinating to discover (such as I just learned that our go-to definition of “solicitation” is much different here than in the UK lol).

One note is that yes, this is a very safe place to speak your mind, but sometimes sensitive subjects do come up. For example, given the situation I’m in, I often bring up the concerning political climate taking over my country. That is obviously a very divisive subject. Disagreements do happen, but luckily most are civil. Just try to be respectful and if you ever do feel singled out or attacked, let a moderator know immediately! I feel as though they are pretty quick to act when we ask for help.

I’m glad you are trying to be brave! Keep it up!

  • Thank you for the thorough and kind message, I really appreciate it. I'm not surprised that you feel the need to bring up the concerning political climate in America, the world seems to be changing in some scary ways. I hope that you're safe and all is well.

  • Totally safe because I’m luckily white, male, and cisgender. However, I live in a region of the Midwest that is notoriously opposed to my worldviews, so I often use this site to vent since it’s a little safer lol.

And no problem! Most people have their direct messages locked to those not accepted as “friends,” but I think mine is open to anybody if you ever have questions or need someone to talk to.

  • Good to know, thanks. I have enabled anyone to be able to message me too, so the same goes to you.

I'm glad that you're safe and I hope that you continue to cope well with the difficulties of the people in your area, that must take a toll.
