Got my diagnosis aged 52. Struggling with most things, including typing this. Feeling adrift after diagnosis, despite meeting people in similar circumstances in my area. I've invested in a number of books on the subject of autism/neurodivergence, the usual histories of-, coping mechanisms and such. I suspect I have ADHD, so reading through them feels a chore. Most days I feel like I'd rather eat them than read them. Hello!

    I also listen to podcasts a lot, mostly comedy and film related. I've just subscribed to the 1800 seconds one. A recent discovery was the 'Neurodivergent Moments' podcast, very easy to listen to and relatable.

    On the subject of rereading paragraphs and struggling with books, one of my earliest reading memories is being about 10 years old and rereading the same two pages of a Biggles book and feeling I couldn't read on until I perfectly placed in my mind's eye the author's description of the characters descending a stone stairway carved into a rock face. An augur of reading experiences to come!

    I too wish I'd done the combined AuDHD diagnosis, alas my ADHD symptoms were fighting for attention with my Autistic symptoms, mainly social difficulties, at the time.

    I had the option of an autistic one with a Scottish psychologist who specialises in older women or roll the dice and do a combined. I might do an ADHD one at a later date, because I score highly on the standard test.

    So I mentioned this in another thread (Positives of Autism) and I gave an example, but I’ve developed a style of writing in my stories that blends script writing from theater for dialogue and the more traditional paragraph form of novels for action/setting. I did it because I CANNOT follow dialogue in most novels. It’s incredibly difficult for me. Like I remember when I was reading the Harry Potter series I kept accidentally reading different characters saying things than who was actually talking. So I use script to make it clear who’s speaking.

    Of course I rarely share my writings, but I feel as though that form of writing would be much easier for ND folk to read in general.
