Mid 50s northener, late diagnosed *Jazz hands*

Got my diagnosis aged 52. Struggling with most things, including typing this. Feeling adrift after diagnosis, despite meeting people in similar circumstances in my area. I've invested in a number of books on the subject of autism/neurodivergence, the usual histories of-, coping mechanisms and such. I suspect I have ADHD, so reading through them feels a chore. Most days I feel like I'd rather eat them than read them. Hello!

  • Hi, I’m a late 50’s Southern Softie, welcome to the community. I’m now wishing I had gone for a combined AUDHD diagnosis, I feel it better describes me, I don’t think I would stand a chance of a referral, I waited 3 years for an autism assessment, I believe the waiting list for ADHD is much longer.

I struggle massively with reading books, I’ve only read 3 in my life, a mixture of ADHD and dyslexia prevents me from processing sentences plus my mind is normally off somewhere else.

I have found audiobooks a big help, I use headphones and shutoff outside stimulus, listening to books allows me to process them. Reading a book can lead to me reading the same paragraph 6 times and it only being a collection of words. I have the audiobooks  on my phone and don’t have piles of unread books laying around. Some biographies have the writer reading them out, some  fiction books use professionals that use different voices for each character, that helps a lot.
