New Parent to Aspergers, help in the Durham area?

Hi, our 7 year old son has just got his Asperger's diagnosis in August, so we are very new in this life long joy ride! We just don't know how to time it right to start explaining his diagnosis to him. He has extremely high anxiety issues and worries alot about how people perceive him. Does anyone have any tips on how to explain it to him? And is there any resources you can recommend? I have had a good look at information on ASD and Asperger's  but its like looking into a black hole at the moment for us!! We live in Durham, North East England and would be greatful to talk with other parents close by. Thank you in advance KB

  • Hi - Sunderland Uni is involved with the study of autism.  Thornhill Park school in Sunderland was set up in 1984 for autistic children.  ESPA (education + services for people with autism) is for adults + covers parts of the north-east.  Via the nas home pg you can do a search to see what's available in Durham for you.  Also do a search on the posts about books that are helpful for both parent + child to understand the condition.  There are a number of recommendations if I remember correctly Smile.  Also it's important he gets the help he may need at school.  It used to be called a statement of educational needs but the govt has changed it.  I wd suggest you have a look on the home pg for its new title + see decide what to do?  Also you cannot poss learn everything at once, so don't even try.  Bit by bit - bite sized chunks - is the best way.  Loads of info via the posts/home pg.  Ask anything you want Smile
