50+ Autistic man, north west, with employment advice questions.

Hi I'm based up here on the Fylde coast.

I was late diagnosis, at around 50 - about 4 years ago. I was submitted for ADHD testing at the time of my diagnosis, but I've been stuck on the waiting list ever since.

My reason for being here is to ask about employment related autism support.

I'm actively looking for work, I've been in Graphic Design/illustration for more than 25 years, but as time is ticking away, traditional means of application are becoming more and more difficult.

I look forward to finding some answers.

Thanks.

The ease with which AI can offer design suggestions and generate content is going to make this a much smaller workforce in the future so it may be worth considering changing career. That is what I did - moving from being an IT manager to self employed property developer.

Do you have other skills or well established interests that could be used as the basis for some ideas? If you want to share them we can offer a few suggestions.

IT is going to be a complete bun fight now as AI is eroding the number of jobs, forcing many to compete in related fields of IT for the few positions that exist. Looking to other areas that AI will be impractical for is a good way to keep your career relevant for the next 2 decades of work ahead of you.

  • Hi. This isn't really helpful due to my diminished ability to interact with the outside world.

  • I agree with Iain that a change in career might be in order. Maybe you could stick with graphic design, but also dabble in another career lane at the same time. The thing is, not all other occupations require a lot of interaction with the outside world. You could enter career paths such as custodial, painting, or factory/warehouse work. Those require little customer interaction and are not as impacted by AI (though, I guess you could argue that factory work is in danger of being replaced by robots…)
